Asheville: The Beer City

Picture this: earlier today you wrapped up a five-mile hike through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Now, you’re kicking back on an outdoor patio, watching the sun set on those beautiful mountains in the distance. You’ve got your favorite people all around, and you’re sipping on an incredible beer brewed a few miles from your house.

Now open your eyes.

That’s every weekend for many residents of Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville has some of the most incredible breweries in the world, serving up incredible beers from IPAs to sours. These killer breweries are one of the many reasons homes for sale in Asheville get snatched up so quick—everyone wants to live where the weather’s good and the beer is flowing.

Asheville Beer Tours

The sheer number of breweries in Asheville can be a little daunting for newcomers. If you’re buying a home in Asheville, don’t fret: you’ll have plenty of time to get to every brewery. However, if you want to knock out a handful on your first day, a brewery tour is the way to go. [We should mention this now: never drink and drive. Always use a designated driver or taxi service, especially if you’re going to multiple breweries!]

A good place to start would be Asheville Brewery Tours. They offer three-brewery walking and mobile tours starting at $49, with tastings included. They also do private tours for small and large groups.

Want some tunes with your brews? The LaZoom Band and Beer Tour is your ticket. A ride on the big purple bus costs $34 and includes three thirty-minute stops at local breweries and a live band playing on the bus the whole way. You’ll have to buy your own drinks, though.

The Best Beer in Asheville

Okay, so you’re asking: what’s the best brewery in Asheville? Would we be cheating if we said all of them? Really—they all bring something different to the table, so it’s impossible for us to pick just one. In fact, we’ll probably end up dedicating multiple posts to the subject somewhere down the line.

We can tell you one of our favorite areas for beer, though: South Slope. Located just outside Downtown Asheville proper, South Slope has a ton of great beer in a walkable location. We love Burial’s giant Tom Selleck and Sloth (of The Goonies) mural, their delicious burgers, and their commitment to heavy metal aesthetics and playlists. Urban Orchard is a good change-of-pace stop that will make gluten-free friends happy with their massive selection of ciders (try the spicy ones—trust us). Catawba has two bars with a total of 30 taps, a beautiful courtyard, and is right around the corner from Vortex Donuts. Green Man, one of the oldest breweries in the state, has a top-porch view of the Blue Ridge Mountains that is absolutely to die for.

The best part about South Slope? We didn’t even put a dent in the number of breweries there. There’s also the Wicked Weed Funkatorium, Eurisko, Hi-Wire, Asheville Brewing, Ben’s Tune-Up, and Bhramari Brewing to check out. It’s going to take you a few trips to hit all of them.
