History and Culture

Fletcher was first settled in 1795 by Samuel Murray. Since its founding, the town’s name has changed three times, from Murrayville to Shufordville, and finally to Fletcher, for the town’s local postmaster at the time. Early settlers found Fletcher desirable for its limestone quarry, which is still mined today.
With easy access to both Asheville and Hendersonville, Fletcher became a stop-through town for travelers. In recent years, this small town has experienced population growth as people discover its vitality and friendly atmosphere.

Fletcher’s award-winning Parks and Recreation Department was recognized for the outstanding Fletcher Community Park.
