Spring is here! The birds are chirping and the flowers are blooming. It’s time to put away the parka and get started on that home garden you’re planning. For Western North Carolina residents, it’s also time to take advantage of the incredible outdoors: whether that you’re attending a festival, taking a camping trip, or simply sitting out on the porch with a local brew and enjoying the sunset.
Whatever your interests are, there is so much to do in North Carolina in the spring. Here are some of our favorite activities.
Take a Road Trip in the Appalachian Mountains
If you live in Asheville or the surrounding areas, adventure is just a quick drive away. Even a short hour in the car can take you somewhere that feels like another world. Finding an incredible new adventure is just as easy as hopping on the highway or the Blue Ridge Parkway and seeing where the road takes you.
One essential stop for any weekend road tripper is Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. The park entrance is just 48 minutes away from Downtown Asheville! There are endless possibilities at this incredible national park. Take a sightseeing trip out the window of your car, go hiking, and stop in at one of the park’s campgrounds to roast marshmallows and enjoy an evening under the stars.
If you want to head east, you can stop off at Linville Falls. The ride there will take you along some of the most scenic stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway and is just as rewarding as the falls themselves. You’ll also have the chance to stop in at Linville Caverns and Linville Falls Winery along the way, two essential experiences in themselves. A trip to Linville Falls could easily be stretched from a whole day trip to a weekend, depending on how many pitstops and hikes you want to hit.
Outdoor Concerts in Asheville
Asheville is a popular touring destination for many regional, national, and international musical acts. The combination of wonderful venues and welcoming crowds makes our city one of the best places on earth for performers. The warm weather also opens up a number of great seasonal venues like Salvage Station. This sizeable venue is situated on the French Broad River, so you can take a look out at the flowing water between sets.
Another great hidden gem is the Hazel Robinson Amphitheater in Historic Montford. It is the only natural amphitheater in Asheville, with a unique stage setup and cozy, secluded atmosphere. It feels like you’re lost in the woods miles from town, but is really just minutes from Downtown. Just make sure you bring a blanket to stretch out on the grass while you enjoy the tunes!
Spring Flower Blooming in North Carolina
Springtime means a whole new set of beautiful colors along the Blue Ridge Parkway. You’ll want to plan at least two or three trips around seeing all of the beautiful wildflowers since many plants have different blooming schedules.
One essential sight for any flower lover is the rhododendron blooms at Craggy Gardens and Craggy Pinnacle. These vibrant pink flowers are a striking sight you won’t ever forget. These flowers, called Catawba rhododendrons, are extremely rare and only grow in the Appalachian Mountains in a narrow stretch from Virginia to Alabama.
Visit the Asheville Spring Herb Festival
The Asheville Spring Herb Festival has been a regional staple for over 30 years. The event brings together herb and plant retailers every year on the first weekend in May. It’s the perfect opportunity for a home gardener to get all of their vegetable plants at once and get off to a great growing season. Whether you’re looking for peppers, tomatoes, kale, or something more exotic, if you can grow it in North Carolina, you can buy it at the Herb Festival. Many of the vendors are farmers themselves and can give you great tips on how to make sure your garden yields a bountiful harvest too!
