Agent vs. REALTOR®: Is NAR Membership Mandatory for a North Carolina Broker?

By KW Asheville November 13, 2025

In North Carolina, all individuals who hold a license from the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC) are legally defined as “Brokers.” However, not all brokers are “REALTORS®.” Do I need to join the National Association of Realtors (NAR)?

NO, membership in the National Association of Realtors (NAR) is not legally required by the NCREC to hold an NC Real Estate Broker License.

The Practical Mandate: Access to the MLS

While the NCREC doesn’t require it, membership in NAR is often a practical necessity for anyone practicing residential real estate in North Carolina. This is because membership in the local Realtor Association automatically enrolls you in the state and national associations, and your local association typically controls access to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS).

If your brokerage requires you to use the MLS (which almost every residential firm does), you must join the association.

  • Broker (Licensee): Licensed by the NCREC and allowed to perform brokerage activities.
  • REALTOR® (Member): A licensed broker who has voluntarily joined the local, state, and national associations and agrees to abide by a strict Code of Ethics. Only members can use the trademarked term REALTOR®.

The Tri-Level Dues Structure

Joining the association involves paying annual dues at three levels, which can be significant for a new agent:

  1. National Association of REALTORS® (NAR)
  2. NC REALTORS® (State Association)
  3. Local Association (e.g., Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington)

These combined dues typically range from $600 to $900+ annually, plus a non-refundable application/initiation fee upon joining.

Benefits Beyond the MLS

Beyond MLS access, being a REALTOR® offers key professional benefits:

  • Code of Ethics: Adherence to a higher standard of practice, increasing public trust.
  • Legal Advocacy: NAR lobbies for pro-real estate policies at the state and federal levels.
  • Resources & Discounts: Access to legal forms, market data, and business tools (like zipForm) often included in your dues.

Key Takeaway

NAR membership is not mandatory for holding an NC Broker License, but it is a practical requirement for most residential agents because it is the gateway to the local MLS. Be sure to budget for the $600-$900+ annual dues and initiation fees required to become a certified REALTOR®.
